It was an apt title for the album because Purgatory was the original name of Iced Earth. Plus, according to Jon's liner notes for the highly regarded album, it symbolized the many years of "suffering" and "paying dues" the band endured to get where it is today.
When we considered a name for the official Iced Earth e-mail list, "Purgatory" instantly came to mind -- but for reasons exactly opposite from the normal meaning of the word.
The Official Iced Earth e-mail list requires no dues. It's totally free. Plus, the only "suffering" involved is for those who don't sign up. They'll wish they had.
